Filling in the gaps: Open data and artificial intelligence for equitable climate action in monitoring, reporting, and verification

Thursday 10 November, 2022, 16:00-17:00 (Egypt Time) - UNFCCC Innovation Hub

Livestream available at www.youtube.com/c/UnfcccInt.

Many areas of the world are underrepresented in available climate and emissions data due to a lack of infrastructure and funding. The lack of data is putting these regions at a disadvantage when developing their nationally determined contributions (NDCs), competing in global carbon emissions markets, or incentivizing climate awareness and action. In recent years, advancements in technology such as artificial intelligence, data science, and global satellite imagery provide us with an opportunity to fill critical knowledge gaps for all countries, while also posing equity challenges to address associated with data availability and digital divides.

Through an expert panel discussion that will focus on real-world use cases and demonstrations, this event aims to inform decision-makers about ways in which new technologies can increase trust and accountability for climate action, including in the Global South. We aim to discuss and share best practices and lessons learned to provide policy-makers with an understanding on how to best mobilize finance, protect communities, and democratize actionable information with open technology.
